Reinstalled Outlook 2013 after system crash what is best way to synch with gmail?

What is the best way for me to synch all the folders in outlook 2013 after reinstalling after a system crash with my surface pro 2 using windows 8.1 Do I just click on each folder one by one or is there some setting I can invoke? All my gmail folders are sitting under inbox as subfolders.

I have about 200 folders and 40,000 emails.

Also do the synch while I am on other screens? Seems like whenever I go back to check progress they haven't moved until I click back on Outlook.
