I am having a tough time with Outlook.

I access with Outlook 2013, Windows 8.1. My normal configuration is two exchange accounts plus a pop3 account, which I have go into one of the exchange account's data file. This worked fine, and then quit.

Outlook stopped opening -- hanging on the processing screen.

I tried the following, to no avail:
* Attempted to repair the .ost file(s) (actually an IT person in the office did this step).
* Created a new profile
* Deleted all the profiles
* Deleted and reinstalled Office
* Tried to create a profile with just one of the exchange setups-I generally could not get it to link to exchange, and the one time I did, outlook would not open with that profile (mind you, this was a brand new profile and .ost file).

None of these created a situation where outlook would open. So, I again deleted all the profiles (and renamed .ost files) and created a new profile with just the pop3naccount. I did this using the mail item in the Control Panel. "Test Account Settings" there succeeds. Even better, I can open Outlook with that profile. However, when I try "Test Account Settings" from within outlook, it fails with:

Task 'eric@xxxxxxxxxxxxx.net - Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook cannot connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

and a send/receive produces the same error.

The pop3 account (and indeed the other accounts, too) are working fine from another client (my Android smartphone).

I am at wits' end (which isn't necessarily all that far from wits' beginning in this case). What can you suggest?

Thank you,
E

Does it work in Safe mode? What add-ins are installed? It sounds like maybe an update caused problems with a firewall or security software. If you know when the problem started and have a restore point, polling back will be the quickest fix.

Thanks for the quick response.

The behavior is the same in Safe Mode. The add-ins are the MS Exhange Add-in, the MS SharePoint Server Colleague Import Add-In, OneNote Notes About Outlook Items and the Outlook Social Connector 2013.

While I do know when the problem started, I cannot tie that to an update. Perhaps this is because I uninstalled and reinstalled, and that wiped out the update history. Oddly, I seem to be running 15.0.4605.1003 -- and this version is not documented on the version history (shown here: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/office-2013-click-to-run#12). So I'm not sure what I'd roll back to or how...

OK, I used the OfficeC2RClient.exe file to downgrade to the previous version, 15.0.4569.1508, with no change in behavior. I'm out of ideas again.

OK -- I disabled hardware acceleration and it made no difference.
Now I have used system restore and gone back -- now none of my office applications work. Repair doesn't work (30145-4). Now have uninstalled and going to install. Any other suggestions?
Thnks

Do you get any error messages? Did you use the full online repair or the quick repair?

I would be interested to know why you advised using the Fixit to uninstall Office rather than first trying the uninstall function in Programs and Features in the Control Panel? I note with interest that the KB article you reference also suggests using the Fixit first and does not mention at all the uninstall function in Programs and Features.

It's the same basic process, with the fixit removing some registry keys the normal method does not. The only difference is in how you start the uninstall process. You can use the normal method then run the fix it, but it says a step to just use the fix it.

Diane, that information is very interesting and, as far as I am aware, is not found anywhere else. It is very unusual though. Fixits are normally used to fix problems, not to perform standard procedures such as uninstalling.

You mentioned an "online repair" ealier in the thread. Various documents on the Internet describe this simply as an uninstall followed by a re-install. If this is true, my inclination would be not to use it. For greater visibility and control, I think that I would prefer to perform an uninstall first (using the fixit, say). And then, after inspecting the results of the uninstall and determining that all is well, I would proceed to re-install.

But perhaps an online repair is, in reality, a little more sophisticated than simply an uninstall followed by a re-install? I could envisage, for example, a procedure that scans all the Office files and registry entries and repairs only those that need repairing, downloading files and other information only if and when required. Do we know any more about how an online repair works internally?

Technically, the Fix it is fixing a problem- is the problem is that office doesn't uninstall correctly/completely. With Office 2013, the online repair open is listed in Control panel, select office, then Change - choose Repair. The C2R version has two options for repair, a quick repair and online repair. Online repair is basically uninstall and full reinstall too - for most users, it's a lot easier because its fully automated - they don't need to uninstall then find their install media (even if its just logging in online).

Diane, thank you. Quote, "... the problem is that office doesn't uninstall correctly/completely ..." - put like that, it's quite an admission! I presume that Microsoft will fix that at some point in the future?

I was already aware as to how to initiate a quick repair or an online repair. But I think you've simply confirmed that an online repair is basically an uninstall followed by a re-install. In which case, I stand by my original statement that I would prefer to perform an uninstall and a re-install separately.

If the standard uninstall doesn't work correctly/completely, it makes you wonder whether the uninstall phase in an online repair also suffers from the same problem!

It's not as bad as it sounds - very few programs uninstall completely, bits are left laying around, usually in a shared common folder, because the program doesn't know if all programs that use the files were removed first. Office is no different. If you prefer to uninstall and reinstall, that is fine - online repair is to make it as seamless as possible for the masses, people like my sister who just want it fixed.

What safe mode did you try? Booting the entire pc in safe mode or just running outlook in safe mode?
