hello,
I just installed OUTLOOK 2016 on win10
catastrophic : it picked up all my folders and structure from gmail as well as old messages I kept on gmail but not on my PC with outlook 2007
now I have been having my own structure on outlook 2007 and never really took care of the one on gmail server, which means it's a... mess
I need to completely do away with what outlook 2016 has picked up but I do not want to destroy the mails !!!
is there a way to stop outlook copying what's on gmail server but for the incoming mails and creating my own rules for outlook ?
and how do I clean outlook from the mess it's picked up ? - remove the account ?

Dang... always hit Enter by accident. :(

to set up manually with the new dialog, expand Advanced and choose manual setup. the older dialog has a manual checkbox in the lower left. corner.

I did it... it's ok to SEND mail... but nothing gets in....
no incoming mail, not even the microsoft outlook test message, which came on the server but not in outlook...
something I did wrong or did not do in the manual set up...?
I went to repair, had 3 or 4 test messages sent, none came in

and it says pop3, even though I went to pop as you recommended... o_O

outlook created a data file, it's sitting on my desktop
I would like to suppress it, it's just cluttering my view
I tried to delete it but had to restore it from the recycle bin, outlook would not open
how can I get rid of it ? all the mails are still on gmail server, I don't need this...

You can't get rid of it - outlook need a local data file to store mail. If you have two - an old pst and this one, you can set the pop account to download to the old pst file in account settings, email tab - select the pop account then click change folder at the bottom of the dialog.

the data file I refer to (and want away) was created when I removed the account from outlook to set it up anew manually.
that's the reason I figure outlook should not need it - I can' have the file sitting on my desktop for eternity (+ a few weeks) !!! :rolleyes:


you can set the pop account to download to the old pst file I think this is what happens now :

and this old .pst file is just in the way
may I then select my email address, remove "My Outlook Data File" from the list and do away with the file sitting on my desktop (if it does not go by itself) ?

but does this mean that the mails which came in since I set up the account in pop will vanish ?
 
if the 'my outlook data file' the one you want to get rid of, set the gmail pst as default then remove the other one. if you don't need anything in it, delete it from the desktop.

If you want to keep the pst, move it into the outlook files folder under Documents.
