Outlook 2010 How to Delete “Orphaned” TO DO? ( Not on Exchange Server)

I have a To Do that I cannot delete, remove, rename, or perform any other action on. When trying I keep getting "The message you specified could not be found." It’s aggravating because it’s at the top of my TO DO list, both in Task View and in the To Do Bar. It was generated by a TASK, which has long been removed and is no longer in deleted folder.

I’ve run SCANPST as well as another PST repair utility with no luck. I’ve run Scannow.

Any suggestions on how to remove this To Do?

Thanks much for any assistance.

If that a flagged message? If you are using IMAP, renaming the IMAP data file and letting outlook resync it should fix it - but you need to export calendar, contacts, and tasks first - if they are in 'this computer only' folder.

I've seen this happen with iCloud tasks. Signing out of iCloud and signing back in fixes it. But I don't recall seeing it with flagged messages though.

Diane,
I am using IMAP. As far as I know this is/was not a flagged message. The attached screen shot shows the To Do. It is the first one, "Start Lawnmower"

I exited Outlook, went to IMAP PST file location and renamed it, went to Control Panel, tried to remove "old" named Data File, but CP made me go to Email tab and delete email account. Then I added renamed file back into data files in CP. So Control Panel indicated new data file but no email account. Opened Outlook and Email account was there, just relocated in Outlook folder view. Orphaned TO DO was still present. I suspect that I did not really do what you intended.

So then I simply deleted all 2 of my IMAP accounts, opened Outlook, no accounts showing, but orphaned To Do is still there.

Anymore guidance?
Thanks much

That is a recurring Task. Is it listed in the Tasks folder?
How many data files do you have in your profile?

It is nowhere. Not in tasks, calendar, deleted items...nowhere. Any operation I try...delete, rename, mark complete, filter, etc gives me the error message indicated above. Interestingly my contacts, calendar, and tasks sync with Google calendar and this To Do does not show up on Google Tasks.

I have one Outlook 2010.pst and two Gmail IMAP.psts. I deleted the IMAPs and opened Outlook. There were no email accounts but the TO DO was still there, so I think I am going to create a new Outlook.pst, sync it with Google and see what happens. I have ex[ported data in case I need it. Not worried though. I have at least 15 recent daily C Image backups, created by three different programs on two external drives.

it's in the pst - for some reason, I thought it was a flagged email and had I seen the screenshot first, I wouldn't have told you to rename the IMAP data files. Exporting the pst to a new pst should fix it, but you will lose custom views and categories. (Categories can easily be restored.)

MFCMAPI should be able to delete it - you'd look in the tasks folder in the pst. The basic steps are in this article, but you'll look in the tasks folder instead.

If the pst file isn't too large to share in onedrive or dropbox, I can take a look at it using mfcmapi.

Diane,
I deleted Outlook.pst and started with fresh pst. Synced all data with Google, and now all is OK!!
Thanks very much for your help,
Tom
