combining outlook accounts

My daughter bought a Windows 8 PC and opened an outlook account, she set up all the details from her account on her Windows 7 PC. On trying to import all the old settings she now has two accounts which appear to have the same name. I have tried to point the new account to her old .pst file, but the program insists on pointing to a new .pst file with the same name as the old .pst file followed by a (2). Both .pst files are in the same folder, I have tried importing the old .pst data to the new outlook, but it is still showing as two accounts and only the new one wil receive emails whilst all the contacts and other details are passively sitting in the old account ! How can I get the new PC to address the old .pst file or merge the .pst files (without having to purchase merging software)?
