Hello Diane. I recently upgraded from outlook.com to Outlook via a subscription. It's been a bit of a nightmare because there are many changes without any explanation. For example, to empty my Deleted Items was easy in outlook.com - two clicks - but in Outlook I now have to right click on the Deleted Items folder and select 'empty folder' to empty the entire folder. Impossible to find that without asking for help.

So I created a thread asking if any of the MVPs had created a "Guide to Outlook". Karl Timmermans MVP said there wasn't anything in the Community Forum but he suggested that I ask you, commenting with a compliment that he didn't "think there's an Outlook topic that you haven't covered"!

I have my fingers firmly crossed when I ask if you have produced such a guide. Best regards. David

PS My signature here shows I have Outlook 2016 64 bit. I've no idea where that came from but in fact I have version 2015 Build 14026.20308 Click-to-Run. I must remember to change my signature when you've replied.

I don't have a step-by-step guide to outlook - just lots of pages of how to's - and I probably don't cover everything- there is just so much to it. It's not unusual to see Outlook desktop referred to as "Outlook heavy" to distinguish it from "Outlook lite" (Outlook on the web) - because it has so many more features and is definitely "heavier". I will often write an article after someone asks about something - so this may end up with an article. (Thanks!)

Re: deleted items - you can make it one click in outlook desktop by showing the Empty Deleted items button in the Quick Access Toolbar or adding it to the ribbon.

The button on the Quick Access Toolbar button can empty the deleted items from any folder - you don't need to open the deleted items folder. But will need to click Yes to permanently delete (which, for outlook.com, isn't exactly true as they are in the recovery folder for a few days).

More Commands... at the bottom of that menu opens Options - where you can choose Customize Ribbon, find Empty Deleted Items and add it to the ribbon. It will be on the ribbon when you view every folder - the Quick Access Toolbar button is less intrusive, IMHO.

To customize the ribbon - find the command and add a new group to add the command to. I use All Commands in the menu, but there are other options - select the command and click Add. Many people create a New Tab and put all of their most used commands on it.

When you created the forum account, you picked that - technically, it is just an older build of 365 that doesn't get updated - they are all Outlook 16.0.*, where the * is the build number. (Thanks for reminding me to check that list and update it. ::)
