I am now using Outlook 2010 but had Outlook 2000 installed, I had tried to remove OL2000 using the uninstall office 2000 program and manually removing any known references to this suite of programs. No problems until today when, on launching OL2010 I was asked by windows installer to insert the Office 2000 CD in order to access the features I needed. I had not requested any 'features' at all. I chose cancel and OL2010 launched.

This problem continued until I got fed up with it and placed the CD in the drive.:( This took some time to 'install' but I do not know what was installed.

The message has now gone but I am wondering how to clear out Office 2000 as obviously its still in there somewhere. I am sure Office 2010 can run independently without having to rely on 2000 to keep it going!

Been doing a bit of digging, the files that were modified at the time of the 'installation' seem to be:

1. Installer.

2. Config.Msi

3. Outlook Files C:|users\me\appdata\local\microsoft\ then mapisvc.inf and outlook.pst have times corresponding to the installation.

4. Outlook C:\users\me\my documents\ then Outlook files\my outlook data file (1).pst has a time corresponding to the installation

On looking through the folders on the C: drive I found on Program Files (x86) Microsoft Office\Office all the Office 2000 files plus 14 folders. These files include Outlook, Word, Excel 97~2000. As these have already been unistalled I am wondering if these could be from the installation to a Virtual Drive which was installed in order to get Outlook to remember passwords that were not remembered running Office 2000 under Windows 7.

Any advice on the best way to remove this folder without messing up my Outlook 2010 would be very helpful!!

Obviously something wants to install the office 2000. I don't think it has anything to do with the the virtual drive.

do the office 2010 programs work ok? did you have any other office 2000 apps installed that were not part of the suite?

BTW, office 2010 does not need any older versions installed. I don't know if it would help to unistall office 2000, but it might be worth doing it then reinstalling office 2010.

Hi Diane.

I installed the whole set of Office 2010 programs but have only used Outlook, Word and Excel and these are working fine as far as I can tell. The others I have not touched yet.

Success

I had 3 'office' folders in my Program Files (x86) folder, two were named other than 'Office' but contained the same files and folders plus there was an Office 14.

In Control Panel I again found a reference to MS Office 2000 Small Business and attempted to uninstall it but the installer could not find the files, or similar message. After renaming one of the folders I was able to uninstall Office 2000 (again) this was done in safe mode.

On reboot I renamed all the 'Office' folders except for Office 14 and rebooted, then launched Outlook, I was requested to install from the Office 2000 CD. I chose cancel and OL loaded.

I then returned the original folder name to the renamed 'Office' folder and again launched Outlook which loaded fine.

This left me with 3 folders containing one complete set of folders and files relating to Office 2000 and two folders with a few files, empty startup and MS07FTP.EXE and 4 others, again I renamed the folders and still OL was launched without problems. I then deleted all 3 folders and left Office 14.

All seems fine for the moment, but keeping my fingers crossed!

Ah... good. I'll keep my fingers crossed too, but I'm pretty sure you solved it. Office 14 is the only one you need/should have. Office 2000 was the last to use the "Office" folder - after that they used the Officexx naming convention, so that is as expected.
