screen freezes, then turns white

Hello,
I am using Outlook 2007 with a Vista 64 laptop. Most of the time OL works fine. Lately when I click on a function, as deleting an email, it locks up (not responding) , and then if I click again the screen gets a cloudy white over cast. A few minutes later it is okay. I think there is something running in the background, but I don't know how to find it.
any help will be appreciated.

Thank you for the reply. I have used that in the past, but I don't remember how to do that.

I do "compress" the PST once a week. that seems to help for a while.
