Can't invite attendees

Outlook 2010 64 bit
Email Account
POP3
When I set up a calendar appointment and try to invite an attendee...either from my contact list or by typing in an address, the invitation just dies. It does not get sent and I get no error message. The only clue is that a ? appears next to the name of the attendee. Here is a screen shot: Any ideas?
