I installed Outlook 2010 on my new Win 10 machine. When I click send/receive I get a message that says "Outlook data file cannot be accessed". I can see my folders in the left pane of Outlook and when I click File/Account Settings/Data Files everything seems OK.

What am I missing?

I used a flash drive to move the pst file from my old system to the new Win 10 machine.

I checked properties. It has full control and is not marked read only.

I found the pst file at C:\Users\samst\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook and C:\Users\samst\Documents\Outlook Files. I don't know why it's in two places. Account Settings in Outlook indicates that the latter is the one in use.

Additional info.

I'm getting Log onto incoming mail server (IMAP): The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider.

Send test e-mail message: Your e-mail server rejected your logon. Verify your user name and password for this account in Account Settings.

I'm certain my user name & password are correct.

Having been unable to get support here and elsewhere I've decided to uninstall Outlook and use Thunderbird instead.

That is the location used by older versions of outlook. if you added the account in outlook 2010 or above, it's in the path under outlook files. Not that it matters, if you moved the correct pst from the older computer, its wherever you copied it to.

But... if you are using imap, the problem isn't with the pst as outlook will create a fresh new imap pst and sync with the server, it won't reuse an old pst you moved.

This message indicates there is a problem with the log on. If you enabled two-factor authentication on the mail server, you need to use the app password, not your real password. If it's a gmail account, you need to enable "less secure clients" in settings. (It's not really less secure, but the older oAuth that doesn't support two factor passwords.)
