Spacebar Not Scrolling Down

In Outlook 2013 on Windows I use the spacebar key to scroll down a page in the message window. Then yesterday I pressed the spacebar key several times quickly and a dialog opened and closed in a split second. Now the spacebar no longer scrolls down. How do I get the old behavior back?
 
You don't know what the dialog was? There is a setting in reading pane options to read using the space bar, but if it was enabled it shouldn't be disabled on its own. Check the setting in View tab, reading pane, options.

The spacebar works in the Reading Pane. It stopped working in the Message window. The dialog closed too quickly for me to see any text.
 
I have restarted Outlook and rebooted Windows but the problem's still there.
