Starting outlook in imap Inbox

I'm using Outlook 2010 with gmail imap.

I want Outlook to open up in the imap Inbox, and I have set it up by going to:

File/Options/Advanced/Outlook start and exit

and browsing to imap.googlemail.com/Inbox and putting that in the "Start Outlook in this folder:" box

Now when Outlook starts it gives the message "Cannot display the folder. Cannot connect to the server."

I can then click on the down arrow beside imap.googlemail.com in the left-hand pane and then click on Inbox, and everything works fine.

It's a minor inconvenience but slightly annoying.

Can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks
 
I'm not sure why its giving you that error - it shouldn't. You don't need to connect to the server - the account folders are cached locally. It works fine with my gmail account and a gmail server - but it shouldn't matter. It's imap and cached locally.

BTW, did you redirect the folders to a network drive? That would cause this error message.
 
Diane, thanks for responding to my query.

No, I didn't redirect any folders. I have a very simple setup - just a home PC and gmail mail. If I set Outlook to open with Calendar, that works fine. And Mail on my ipad opens in the Inbox. It's a bit strange, but not critical.

I have my profile set to open to my gmail inbox and I'll see if i can repro it with regular use.

Go to file, account settings - select the google account and look at the file name at the bottom of the dialog. does it say alias@google.com.pst or alias@google.com(n).pst, where n is a number above 1? If its a high number, outlook could be making new pst files frequently - when you start outlook, the pst file isn't ready yet so it errors.
 
The account is actually listed as imap.googlemail.com (i.e. it doesn't contain my mail username)_


At the bootom of the dialog it says: Selected account delivers new messages to the following location


imap.googlemail.com/Inbox in data file C:/Documents and Settings/.../Outlook/imap.googlemail.com.pst

This problem has now gone away without my making any further changes to Outlook.

It starts in the gmail Inbox, without giving the error message.

Perhaps some resynchronisation with the gmail server was done automatically.
