In another forum, they announced the availability of a "new" Outlook. so I followed the link. I was astonished to see that support for third-party mail (Google, Yahoo, etc) is "limited." Is Microsoft still in touch with the real world?

I don't see where it says that - at initial release it was limited to exchange, then Gmail was added and a few weeks later iCloud and yahoo. Those all sync calendar & contacts from the respective accounts. They've been available for quite a long time now. some IMAP accounts from regional ISPs are a problem though. New Outlook using Microsoft cloud to sync with the mailbox and the app syncs with the cloud. The ISPs - mostly European - block Microsoft access.

Important: Most accounts are supported in new Outlook. This includes Microsoft accounts such as an Outlook.com or Hotmail.com account, work or school accounts assigned to you by your organization’s admin, third-party accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo!, iCloud, and other third-party accounts connecting through IMAP.
