My first post:)

I have upgraded to Win 7 Professional and wanted to install my Outlook 2000, I know its ancient but it worked fine on my old XP system and I am lacking in enough funds to by the new version. I am not a student so that route is not an option!

I attempted to Install Outlook in Windows 7 but this only resulted in the loss of the WAB.dll file and I was not able to import my emails etc so after some useless attempts gave up and removed the program. I am wondering if this part installation is causing my problems now or not?

Okay, I have, after much messing around as above, installed XP MODE as a virtual PC on my Win 7 system, this then did allow me to install Outlook 2000 and I was able to import my emails and address book, my accounts as .iaf files and all seemed fine.

The problem is that Outlook will not remember my passwords (3 accounts) so these have to be entered everytime I send or receive.

I found a Microsoft fix which involved running regedit32 and deleting a sub key of 'Protected Storage System Provider' I could only find regedit (without the 32 suffix) but still found the key and sub folder which I deleted after copying the file so I could put it back.

This has made no difference as I still need to enter my passwords each time, I seem to be so close to finishing that it is really frustrating. I hope someone here is able to point me in the right direction to correct this problem.

Happy Christmas one and all.

BTW, are you closing and reopening outlook? I'm surprised the password isn't remembered as long as outlook remains open.

Hi Diane.

Thank you for your replies.

My Windows 7 Outlook 2000 installation shows all my emails, receives emails and remembers passwords. But it cannot find my address book and cannot send any emails.

My Windows XP Outlook 2000 installation on my V PC shows all my emails, sends and receives but does not remember passwords, I tried sending an email and then entered my password, I then tried to send another email and again had to enter my password.

I will try your suggested links so see if I can fix the problems!!

It has been suggested that I install my own copy of XP Home in case the downloaded Virtual copy of XP has been cut down and so will not allow the passwords to be remembered, seems a bit far fetched to me but it might be correct, any thoughts on that suggestion?

Well, success at least with the installation under Windows 7 Pro! Two days of messing around and then 30 seconds to sort out a missing address book, Outlook now sends and receives. How?

Click Start Menu.

Scroll to Microsoft Outlook

Right click link

select Troubleshooting Compatibility

Follow on screen prompts and instructions.

click Finish

Open Outlook.

No messages about missing WAB.dll :D:D:D

There were no entries in the address book but I can always enter these manually. I am using Outlook 2000.

Well it worked for me so I hope it works for you too!

I'm not really sure how it is done, but its my understanding that it is not identical to installing vpc and creating your own virtual machine from an OS disk. I haven't used it since the early days of Win7 but seem to recall that it was pretty seemless in that you didn't know you were in a virtual machine, where as with a true virtual machine, you have the second machine in a window, not unlike using remote desktop to another computer. Windows is not my area of expertise, and its been forever since i tried the MS VPC method, so I could be way off...

I re-read this tonight and realized you probably have outlook in compatibility mode. That often causes more problems than it fixes. Did you register the wab.dll file?
