Persistent Attachment Error Message

Hello everyone! I have a user that gets an error message almost every time he opens an attachment in Outlook 2010. Most of the attachments are Acrobat but the issue also happents with Office documents or pictures. The error message reads:

"A program has attachment [filename] open. Changes to the file will be lost unless you save your changes to another file by clicking the File Tab in the other program, and then clicking Save As."

This is followed by an "OK" button to close the message.

He's not editing the attachment. Simply opening and viewing the attachment and then closing it. He's not changing messages, with the attachment open, and that shouldn't matter anyway. Almost everyone in the same environment can open and close attachments without getting the above message. Does anyone have a solution I can try? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!--Seth

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. When doing research on this issue, I actually came across that article you authored and tested it out on my machine. I have the preview pane open and when I open an attachment from inside the preview pane it opens just fine. If I change messages and then try to close the attachment, I don't get a warning at all. My user has his preview pane open, and he also opens his attachments from inside the preview pane. It doesn't matter if he switches messages or not, when he attempts to close the message, he gets the warning I described at the top of this thread.

I will check out his client to see what's checked off in the trust center. As for the other suggestions in the article, he doesn't want to add more steps to get it to work the way it's supposed to work already. :) To be fair, he's only opening the attachment to look at it, not to alter it in any way.
 
What addins does he have installed? If an add-in adds a toolbar button to the document it can trigger a similar message - I didn't mention it earlier because the message isn't quite the same and it would only affect specific file types, not all files.

This person's Outlook experience is getting worse by the day and we're now getting other Office issues, unexpected crashes, restarts, etc. It looks like something may have gotten corrupted, either on the drive or in memory. We're about to start a new computer roll-out and this user is one of the first recipients (he doesn't know it, or I would have suspected self sabotage as root cause :D). Hopefully that will solve the many problems that have popped up.

Does it work better in Safe mode? Are there error reports in the Event Viewer?

To open Outlook in Safe mode: Close Outlook then hold Ctrl as you click on the Outlook icon. You'll get a message asking if you want to start in Safe mode. Click Ok.
