Resolving mil.mail domain

I am using ol2003 and Win XP/SP3. About 50% of the emails I send to any address in the mail.mil domain are undeliverable with the following error:



450 4.1.8 - Domain of recipient does not resolve [R0309001]




This started about a month ago. Is this an error from Outlook or from a server not being able to resolve the domain?
 
It's an error with the mail infrastructure. Check your DNS record - does your mail server's IP address reverse lookup to your domain name.

For example, mail.domain.com is sending from ip 111.222.333.444 but a reverse lookup on 111.222.333.444 shows the service provider's name of nyc.twc.com. You can check this at network-tools.com

Thanks for the prompt reply but I do not fully understand your response. When you state, "It's an error with the mail infrastructure", what does that mean? Which mail infrastructure? Mine? mail.mil? I tried your suggestion, i.e., to see if the reverse lookup resolves to the correct service provider and it does.




By the way, this is not unique to a particular network or outgoing mail server. I run on three different physical networks and use the appropriate mail server (as required by the particular ISP) on each network. I have encountered the same problem at about the same frequency on all three networks.
 
The problem is on your end. If the reverse DNS is correct. What firewall & security software do you use? Do you use the isp dns or run your own dns? If there is a problem connecting the DNS this error can result.

If you use AVG, Norton, McAfee or any antivirus that installs an Outlook addin to scan mail, disable scanning on sends.

Also, triple check the addresses for typos.
