Default Program for Opening .pst Files ?

Hello,

Recently, while playing with the back-up and export function in my Outlook 2007 (on Windows 7), I backed up a folder as a .pst file. I was then going to try encrypting it to see how that function works within Outlook (not really knowing that much about it). Well, somehow with all my clickety-clicking I must've changed the default program for opening the files. They are now set to open with Word (which doesn't seem to work). And I forgot what the default program was for opening these files. It didn't seem to be the Outlook icon, as I recall.

I tried searching here and elsewhere online, but couldn't find what I'm looking for. So, I thought the simplest thing to do would be to ask.

Thanks for any assistance in getting these files restored to their default settings.:)
 
It doesn't matter what application is assigned to the pst file type. but you can change it with a right click on it and choose Open with... and you can select Outlook.exe but the pst files can't be opened by double clicking, you need to use File, Open, Outlook data file to open it.
 
Ah. Okay, thank you very much for that information. That relieves some of my anxiety. :) (My problem was that I was going to File > Data File Management, etc.)

I have changed it now to Outlook (instead of Word), but it's not the icon I originally saw on the various Outlook data files (AppData > Local > Microsoft > Outlook). I can't remember exactly what the default icon looked like nor what program it represented. :confused:

In the registry - what does the (Default) value for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.pst have? It should say PSTfile.

Find PSTFile key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PSTFile\DefaultIcon - what is the default icon?

C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office12\OUTLOOK.EXE,10 is used here. (The 10 is the key to the icon)

Except for my reg showing "PROGRA~2\MICROS~1" it's identical to what you suggest. So, since the '10' is the key, everything should be fine, even though it doesn't seem to be the same one I saw initially. Whatever. As long as I didn't do anything bad that will come back to haunt me later. :)
