Folder issues using Gmail with Office 2013

I am having a few issues with Gmail and Office 2013.

NOTE: Outlook shows 2 distinct folder structures. One is Outlook Data File and the second is the Gmail structure which displays my Gmail e-mail address.

When I receive a NEW incoming e-mail, they show up in the Gmail INBOX folder and NOT my OutLook INBOX folder. I want the new incoming e-mails to show up in my Outlook INBOX folder ONLY and not in the Gmail INBOX folder

Whenever I send a NEW outgoing e-mail, it shows up in the Gmail SENT folder and NOT in my Outlook SENT folder. I want the sent items to show up in my Outlook SENT folder ONLY and not in the Gmail SENT box.

In addition I have large message headers on incoming e-mails. I have tried to find a solution to this which evidently was corrected in an update from 2013, but when I download the update and try to install it, it says I do not need the update. From what I gather, the "fix" adds a chevron on the lower right portion of the message header so that you can "shrink" the size. Although the update says it is installed, it is not. The chevron DOES NOT appear on my message headers. I have already taken out the potential pictures from the headers with a setting. I want the message headers minimized.

Any help would be wonderful

This is normal with imap and is the recommended way. You could set the imap data file as default (a feature new to outlook 2013) and use the 'this computer only' folders for calendar and contacts but it's risky and you could lose them.

This is normal with IMAP. if you want it delivered to the pst file, you need to use pop3, not imap.

Like the inbox (and deleted items), this is normal for IMAP accounts... and the solution is... use POP3 instead.

The main reason for using imap is that everything on the server is identical in outlook - if you mark something read, it's marked read on all of your devices.


On the header - you should definitely have the chevron pointing up or down if outlook is fully updated. What is your outlook version - look in File, Office Account. 15.0.04711.1004 is the newest. Which suite do you have?

This is the "small" header, even though it looks big (the note in the InfoBar takes up a lot of space at this width).

Thanks for getting back to me.
Header issue… no chevron. My version is the current one you mentioned. I am using Office 2013. I attached a screen shot w/o the chevron at the bottom..Also, will I have any problems switching from IMAP to POP3? I was able to get around some of the folder issues by creating rules to move files.. Some stay as UNREAD when the rules move them

You'll need to remove the imap account from your profile and add it back as POP3. Only email in the inbox will download when you use pop3. If you don't use the calendar and contacts or are good about exporting them for backups, you could set the IMAP data file as default in File, Account Settings, Data files tab - but if something happens the data file and you don't have a backup of the 'this computer only' folders, you'll lose the data.


Hmmm. I'm seeing the same thing (missing chevron) on opened messages in a test profile - but I do have it in the reading pane.
