Sync Outlook contacts with iPhone

I am setting up my newly acquired iPhone to sync contacts with Outlook, as a backup for the phone. I want the phone contacts (which are only going to be phone numbers, at least initially) to be separate from my existing contacts in Outlook. I don't want my existing Outlook contacts on my phone.

Do I need to take all my existing Outlook contacts and put them in a separate folder in Outlook contacts? I seem to remember that Outlook will sync only what is in the main contact folder. Please advise.

How are you syncing? Most sync solutions now support all folders but the folders can be 'turned off' on the device.

If you use iTunes, you can set it to sync a specific folder.

I was planning to use iTunes. But now you've got me curious. What other sync solutions can you recommend?

For apple, iCloud. There are also 3rd party sync utilities, but with apple, either iCloud or iTunes works fine.

With iTunes, you can choose to sync only one contact folder.

Thanks for the info. I had not thought about using iCloud for the contacts sync. I uploaded my contacts to it successfully. That took some doing, it only seems to want a single V card containing all the contacts. I used an old Gmail account to make the conversion. But it worked well. Thanks.

I've not had the chance yet to look into what you said about iTunes letting me sync only one folder, I do want to see how to do that.
