how to sync automatically when outlook opens

When I open Outlook 2013 I have to go to each mailbox, click the SEND/RECEIVE tab and then UPDATE FOLDER.
Previously, in this and prior versions of outlook, this happened automatically, but I've been unable to find how to make it happen!

Ctrl+Alt+S to open the Define Send/Receive Groups dialog - if it is set to check every xx minutes, then it will run at startup and again every xx minutes. For best results, check no less than every 5 minutes (closer to 10 min is generally ideal) and don't change the settings in the send/receive groups - use the defaults that outlook sets.

I need to test this tomorrow when I start up, but I did want to mention that when I went into that dialog, it was already set to every 30 minutes. Wondering if I might be impatient about the email server loading...thinking it wasn't happening when it was just taking some time.
 
I would lower it to between 5 and 8 minutes, unless you really want it set to 30 min. Note that with imap accounts, if you visit a folder, outlook will look for new messages in that folder immediately. The 30 min setting only apply to checking all folders and sending mail (if you aren't using send immediately).
 
It was previously set to 30 and I reset it to 7 yesterday.
This morning, launched and went to my personal email inbox...10 minutes...no update.
But, I've been thinking about moving to office 2016 and maybe I'll focus on doing that and see if it works.
 
Outlook isn't set to work offline is it? (The work offline button would be highlighted, not the same color as the other buttons if you are in offline mode.)

I would close outlook, go to %appdata%\microsoft\outlook (copy and paste that in the address bar of file explorer, then press enter) and delete the .srs files. This will reset all send and receive settings to default. Restart outlook and lower the time from 30 to 7 again. Does it work now? At the very least, opening a folder should download/update mail in that specific folder.
 
not in offline.
did the delete...a bit hard to test before tomorrow when I restart after a long period
 
nope. closed outlook. went to my personal gmail account using my browser. sent test message to my personal email address. waiting long enough and re-opened outlook. waited a while and no load. clicked update folder and 2 new messages appeared.
 
when I moved from Outlook 2013 to Outlook 2016 - I'm syncing automatically. Closed!
