I hate this message: "The operation cannot be performed because the message has been changed".

It can be worked around, not least by going into Calendar and coming out again. That usually works. And there are similar workrounds. They all work, but they are workrounds, not solutions.

Other forums on the web suggest (and I tend to share their view, without having any of their technical expertise), that it is a timing problem.

But I note, Diane, that it is not an issue into which you yourself have dived with enthusiasm to provide a solution!

Can I just check - is it because there simply is NOT a solution?

I'm not aware of a solution - just work arounds. The one I use is to select a different item then go back to the original one - you don't need to change folders - just change messages.

The cause is a bug where Outlook doesn't process the OK for the server that the changes were accepted. If you get this when you read mail, setting Outlook to not mark mail as read when you use the reading pane will help too. That way you only get the error when you open or reply then try to move it.

LOL - and I just had the error on a message in an exchange mailbox - flagged a message, replied to it then immediately changed the flag to completed - I went really fast - moving slower would likely have avoided the error.

But that was with an exchange account - for IMAP the only way to avoid it is switching items.
