Cannot edit a calendar event received as an invitation

I use Outlook 2019 for Windows as a free-standing POP3 client (i.e., not with Exchange). When I receive a calendar invitation and accept it to add it to my Outlook calendar, I can't edit the event's notes. I am able to edit the event's title, location, and Outlook categories, but I cannot edit the event's notes. (I also cannot change the time directly in the event itself, but I can drag the meeting to another spot on the calendar.)

In the past, I'm pretty sure I was able to make changes to the notes, and Outlook would give me a warning that since I'm not the organizer, any changes I make would apply only to my calendar and would be overwritten if the organizer updated the invitation.

Why can't I make changes now, and is there a way to get this capability back? Sometimes when I get invited to something, I like to make a note to myself about the meeting.

Solution

This has finally been addressed by Microsoft. Apparently, the ability to edit calendar events received as invitations was purposely disabled to address a security vulnerability. A workaround was eventually added to Outlook in the form of a new Edit Meeting button that can be added to the ribbon.

Open a calendar event (meeting) and customize the ribbon by adding the Edit Meeting function from the Commands Not In Ribbon menu. Then, you can make any invitation editable by clicking the button and dismissing the warning.
