hi,

i successfully restored my HP laptop OS last weekend . Vista Home Premium. i then reinstalled outlook 2010, imported my backed-up pst, which is the same name as my email address, and after a long whilie, my emails, sub-folders, and tasks/to-do lists all show, but no calendar or contacts. have tried the 'open' and 'import' options. more than a few times. have since used system restore to go back before the outlook install, have re-installed with only the same result: no contacts and calendar. i'm pretty tech savvy but outlook seems overly complex when it comes to storage, book keeping, etc., and this is baffling me. i thought the .pst files stored EVERYTHING and after importing, all the data would be as it had before.

thanx in advance. any help will be greatly appreciated,

george

Rather than import, open the pst file in your profile. Press Ctrl+6 to jump to the folder list then look in calendar and contacts folder. Do you see the missing items?

How many accounts are in your profile? Are you use you saved the correct pst file?

See Add Old Data File (*.PST) in you need instructions on using an old profile in a new pst.

hi larry, thanx for getting back. right now there is only one acct in my profile. i'm starting to wonder if my contacts and calendar data are actually in my pst. when i go thru these processes, again i only get my email acct working fine, with all subfolders, plus i have tasks/to-do lists intact. i tried everything you suggested, including the step by step in the video. any way to check a pst for content?

if you open the pst in outlook using File, Open, Outlook Data file, you can riht click on the top level folder and choose Properties, then Folder size. This will list the size of the pst and each folder within it.

Did you look in the Contacts folder? When you click To button or open the Address book, you may not see any contacts even though they exist - this is caused by a misconfigured or corrupt profile.

larry,

thanx again. and excuse my ignorance, but this seems really complex. i've done what you say, going to file, open, outlook data file, and i right click on my pst that i have backed up, which is named my email address. (myname@yahoo.com). (i use yahoo imap connector. works like a charm if you're wondering how i'm doing that.) so when i right-click and choose properties, just like any other file, under general it shows file type; Outlook Data File (.pst), location, size, in this case, 5.96 gb, when created, modified, etc. but i don't seen any option for sizes of individual files. i've checked uder the security and details tabs too.

if this can help, i very recently put in a new hard drive, and my old one from some weeks back is still intact with outlook up and running with all my info. could i somehow swap out the drives, start the laptop and copy or export something to facilitate this process? then i could easily update my calendar to bring it up to date.

once again, thanx for the patience and help,

g

Oh. This is an IMAP pst file? That won't have calendar, contacts, tasks or notes folders as IMAP doesn't support them. You'd have a separate pst file for the non-mail folders.

This is from my imap account - you might have more folders than me, but will only have mail folders. In Outlook, I right click on the root folder of the imap folder where it has my email address and clicked on properties to open the dialog.

What IMAP connector are you using? I didnt know yahoo had a connector (but i also don't use yahoo.)

Oh, and you don't need to swap the drives, just connect the old one to the new computer and find the pst files - See http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/recover-outlook-files-crashed-computer/ for the steps but it sounds like you know the basics - you'll want to look for the pst at [new_drive_letter]:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook (assuming winxp).

eureka! sounds like you hit the nail on the head. i guess i should have stated that it was an imap acct to begin with. sorry. and i'm in vista home premium. the yahoo imap connector is made by bravura software. http://www.bravurasoftware.com/yahoo-imap/ i think it's around $15 and well worth it. i've had my email address for over 10 yrs and didn't want to abandon it when i started using outlook 2010 last year. easy enough to set up and once i'd set it, it was seemless and never failed.

so if and when i find other pst files in my older drive, will there be one just for calendar and one just for contacts? do i then import them separately?

once again, thanx,

g

There should be just one pst with both calendar and contacts in it. You might find more than one pst file (outlook goes nuts sometimes :)) but calendar and contacts should both be in the same pst. Go by file size and last modified date - or open all in Outlook and check the folders. The pst will probably be called outlook.pst.

larry,

was able to find that particular outlook.pst file on the old drive, and i've put it on a thumb drive. was able to open it using kernel outlook pst viewer, and indeed the calendar and contacts are in there. (some of the calendar items looked a bit whacked, but i'm hoping they're fine, because they were when last used in outlook.) so now that i have outlook up and running correctly with email, how do i now get all the calendar and contact data in, and second, how in the world do i back this stuff up from here on out so i don't have to go thru this again in the future?

you've been a huge help. thanx again,

g

What version of Outlook created the file? Assuming it is Unicode, you could move the pst file to your My Document folder - place it in the Outlook Files folder. Then open it using File, Accoumnt Settings, Data file tab, Add. Set it as default and remove the current default pst (assuming its empty). If there is a pst there by the same name, rename your old pst to [name]-old.pst.

If its the old ANSI format, see Convert ANSI to Unicode for different methods you can use to move the cotents to the new default pst file. Actually, importing or any the methods on that page will work even if its unicode, if you don't want to switch the pst files around.

I know a lot of people say importing is bad, but honestly, since only calendar and contacts are affected, maybe tasks and notes, I would probably just import and be done with it, especially if there are items in the new pst Outlook created with your profile.

Hi~
I'm agree with you that everything about mail are saved in the pst file, normally when you import your pst file to your outlook, it will show everything, but if the pst file is corrupted, maybe it cannot show some items. So I think you can try to fix the pst file use some tools such as scanpst.exe or Advanced Outlook Repair, you can google them for more detail information.
Hope this can help you !

Julie
