My calendar appointments spontaneously lost all of their colour categories. I still have all of the custom categories in the list for selection, but all of the actual appointments lost their colours. I started reinstating them and the same thing happened again, and this time I have lost a recurring appointment as well. This is not such a problem for the future, but I need to keep track of previous occurrences which are now gone. All of the posts I have seen regarding this describe the categories in the selector changing from their custom names to things like "blue category" or "orange category" but that has not happened in this case, so the recommendation to re-name the colour category thereby reinstating the colours on the calendar does not work here.

I should add that the email account is Exchange Activesync via Google hosting. The calendar also syncs with the calendar on my iPhone 6, though the problem did not happen in conjunction with any iOS updates. It did happen a few days after an Office update so I don't know whether that had anything to do with it.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not aware that I am using the Google Apps sync utility. It's certainly not something that I recall setting up. Also I have had the Google email hosting for over a year and haven't had this problem until now. In Outlook when I view the accounts list, it does say "Exchange ActiveSync"

Double click on the account in Account Settings - what URL is it using for the EAS server? When Outlook 2013 first introduced EAS account types, google blocked outlook from using it, because it uses a lot of server resources. (Outlook.com supported it at first but is now closing it down too.)

The last I knew the only way to sync calendar and contacts to google business accounts was using the google apps sync utility. It added the account as a MAPI account. This sync app supports many outlook features. (Free gmail hasn't supported the sync app in many, many years - you need to use a 3rd party addin to sync.)

The problem with categories on gmail is that the gmail server doesn't support them (most imap servers don't) - this is why categories are disabled in IMAP. Outlook could set them and they'd remain local but they would not show on multiple computers and resyncing would wipe them out. It sounds like this is what is happening to you - unfortunately, you can't change it.
