need help setting up outlook first time

Outlook 2016 64 bit
Email Account

I've tried to use the advice of previous threads

I opened outlook and entered my email to set up then I get a pop up asking
for name and password for the following server
shows imap.gmail.com
shows my email address
password*******
I click ok but it doesn't work

it states the connection to the incoming IMP server was dropped.

I followed the "you may need to change your gmail settings" but it still isn't working for me.
I'm sure its something simple but I need help determining what it is.

Either you are using 2 factor authentication outlook doesn't yet ask for the second factor - but will soon) or you aren't using 2-factor and followed gmail steps to not allow less secure apps. (Gmail often sends out emails asking you to review security settings)
