Okay, I'm having a bear of a time finding anything online to help me. Keep in mind I am quite new to VBA.

Currently using Office 2007 on WinXp but my organization will be upgrading to Office 2010 and Win7 in the fall.

Here's what I need to do:

My group has a shared folder where emails to "Group1@organization.com" are sent where anyone in my group can view/ reply to messages.

I want to have Outlook automatically (using VBA) to set the "From" field to match what address it was originally sent to (either my own account, or the shared account). As of now, we have to do it manually by showing the "From" line and typing in the address.

Caveats:

  • Our IT dept does not allow us to set these up as Outlook accounts and we cannot add them into our email accounts.

  • Emails may have multiple recipients so we'll have to search for the address in the recipient line.

It's fine to put the from addresses in the code ("Group1@organization.com" and "Me@organization.com") rather than referencing them. I think it's easier to alter the code for each person in my group.

Thanks in advance!!!

I know there are addins that will set the reply address automatically, but I don't have any VBA code handy. I'll take a look at it - it would make a good article for my 'lazy programmer' series.

I've been playing with this and I can see a few issues that will make it more difficult. First, if there are more than one addresses in the to field or if you are cc'd, you would need more complicated code.

If clicking a button to reply from Group1 would suffice, that is possible (and i have some code sample already that will do this.) You'd read the message and decide which account to reply from and click the button instead of the standard reply button.

I also have code that uses the From address in a selected message as the From address on a new message.

Try this code - create a button for this macro on the QAT and click it when you want to reply. This code works with selected messages in the message list, i didn't test it with an opened message. It can be used for new messages too with a little tweaking.

Code:
Public Sub New_Reply()

Dim oAccount As Outlook.Account

Dim oMail As Outlook.MailItem
   Set oMail = Application.ActiveExplorer.Selection(1).Reply
     oMail.SentOnBehalfOfName = "email@address.com"

   oMail.Display

End Sub

Code:
Public Sub New_Mail()

Dim oAccount As Outlook.Account

Dim oMail As Outlook.MailItem
Set oMail = Application.CreateItem(olMailItem)
     oMail.SendUsingAccount = account-name
     oMail.Display

End Sub

code comes from http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/2010/multiple-accounts-and-the-default-account/2/#2 and http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/email/choose-the-account-to-send-a-reply-from/

Oh, that is great- you are awesome!

I'm surprised at how simple the code ended up being. The other stuff I was trying using code written to use other accounts was quite long.

Also, FYI on the second bit where you had "oMail.SendUsingAccount = account-name" I had to change it to 'oMail.SentOnBehalfOfName = "email@address.com"'

Thanks again!
