From field in the Nav Pane

When looking at the navigation pane for a mail folder (Inbox, for example), the From field seems to follow no particular patter (so far as I can tell):

It seems true for mail items that originated from an address that the Exchange server has in the GAL, the display is Last, First. However, for items that came in from my contacts, the display in the From field does not match the contact item's "File As" field. My contact items are all set to "File As: Last, First", but in the Inbox nav pane I have some Last, First and some First Last.

Have I explained this such that you can understand what is going on and is anyone able to shed some light on the reasoning behind it? Or what mechanism might explain it? If not I can provide some screen caps if need be.

Outlook doesn't get the display format from the Contacts but from the format the sender configures in their mail client (or that the admin configured in the case of Exchange mailboxes) and unfortunately, you can't change it.
