I had a catastrophic computer failure and am now trying to get back on my feet. I had backed up my entire computer onto an HP Simple Save external hard drive. I reinstalled Outlook on to my new computer which runs Windows 8 (unfortunately :( ). When I ask the external hard drive to restore on to the new computer, in the original pathway, it won't do that, I think because the setup (path) is not named exactly the same or something. I can backup into a "restored items" file but I can't figure out how to get the info back into Outlook. I tried file-open-import-etc...get to browse - enter the .pst file - but it says the path is not valid. I'd be grateful for any help.

I'm sure it's a problem with the file path. Can you see the pst file in the restored items file? If so, move or copy it to your My Documents folder before trying to connect it to Outlook.

The simplest method might be to do the restore to "restored items" then locate the pst file in there and copy or move it to your Documents/Outlook Files folder. Then open it from within Outlook. (Exactly how you open it will depend on your version of Outlook). If the new Outlook pst file that was created when you installed Outlook has no useful data, you could instead just replace that with the original file, as long as they have the same name. Then Outlook will automatically open it when you start Outlook. Be sure Outlook is closed when you do this. Edit: looks like two of us posted at the same time.

We prove its the right answer. :):):)

I think I can see it. Restored files - c - users - Betsy - appData - local - Microsoft -outlook gets me to where I can see a number of files. The only one that looks right is called Outlook, type "outlook data file" and it has 700,000 plus kb so that looks right. I don't see the .pst but none of the others have .pst either. So I copied it to the desktop - Word froze when I tried to copy it there. Now I should try to import it from there?

YAY!! It worked!! You two are fabulous. Thanks SO much.
