Easy way to re-import Gmail folders/labels into Outlook?

Outlook version
Outlook 2013 32 bit
Email Account
Outlook.com (as MS Exchange)
I previously imported my Gmail folders ('labels')/ emails into Outlook 2013 - but have now realised that subsequent changes to the folders in Gmail do not sync (eg. any new folders I created).
I want to permanently switch from Gmail to Outlook / Outlook.com (and a new Hotmail email address) - so want to make a 'final' import of all my Gmail folders and then add nothing else to them.
If I go to re-import Gmail into Outlook.com it tells me to delete all existing emails to avoid duplicates.
Is there a quick way to do this?
Lastly - I assume that this has no impact on the few Hotmail emails I've saved in recent weeks??
Thanks.

You have two choices - one will work only if you can use outlook 2010 with the Hotmail connector (2007 and 2003 support the connector too) - oh, i forgot, outlook.com supports imap, so you can do it in 2013. Mail in the Hotmail account already won't be affected unless you delete it.

1. Set up the gmail account as an imap account in outlook and let it sync - give it a day or two, more if you have a lot of mail. Then export to a pst file and drag the mail from the gmail pst to outlook.coms. You can drag folders and subfolders - it won't be too painful. I'd do this over exporting it into the account as you want to upload in smaller batches.

You may be able to skip the export to a pst part - try it and see.

2. set up gmail as a connected account in outlook.com and let it suck in the mail.

Thanks Diane.
No.2. - gmail is already in my outlook.com - appears as both a connected and an 'added' account (is this incorrect?). Folders aren't updating - nothing changes when I use the refresh option at the top of the folders pane. Within gmail it is set to forward email to my hotmail and mark as read - is this also incorrect / unnecessary?

No.1 - gmail already setup as an imap a/c in outlook - but again is not syncing folders. Any settings I should have changed in either outlook or gmail itself?
If I go this route - dragging folders from a .pst file - will I need to delete everything already in outlook to avoid creating duplicates??

Since you want to switch to outlook.com permanently, no. 2 is what you want to do, but it should be working.

No.2 - you either need outlook.com to suck in the mail or gmail to forward, not both. I'm not sure which is the better option, but you only need to do one, otherwise you get duplicates. Forwarding is faster - mail is forwarded as it arrives in gmail. Connected accounts poll every half hour.

Log into Gmail.com and check the account settings - are there any error messages with the forward?

No 1. Something is not right - it should be syncing if there is mail in the inbox. If you forward and archive, it will be in the All Mail folder under [gmail].

Thanks Diane - and yes having future gmail emails just forwarded to hotmail should work for me.

So what is the best way to create a 'final' copy of all my gmail folders and their old emails - available both in Outlook and Outlook.com? Outlook wont let me copy folders or individual emails from gmail to hotmail so will the following work - ?
1. Delete all the folders and their contents currently in Outlook.com. Is there any quick way of doing this?
2. Remove gmail account / folders from Outlook.
3. Re-import my gmail account into Outlook.com- I assume this should bring all the current gmail folders. Once I've checked everything is there I expect to see ...
4. Remove my hotmail account from Outlook and delete all folders / emails. Can this be done by deleting a .pst file?
5. Add my hotmail back in to Outlook - I assume this should bring all the latest folders from outlook.com with it?

If there is a simpler way I'm happy to try it!
Thanks

I would:
  1. leave gmail set up as imap in profile.
  2. In Outlook, delete any folders I created in the EAS account and empty deleted items in outlook.com account. Delete if there is a lot of old mail in the outlook.com inbox, delete it.
  3. add the outlook.com as imap to outlook 2013.
  4. *Copy* folders (not move) from gmail to outlook.com imap - if the folders are nested, you will need to do a folder at a time. Wait for the mail to upload and sync to the EAS folders.
  5. Be patient - it can take a long time to sync if you have a lot of mail.

Many thanks Diane - this was quite painless and folders appeared to sync quite quickly!
I now have my hotmail account appearing twice within Outlook - the original EAS and the latest IMAP one. Obviously I dont want both but presumably having it as EAS improves my syncing of calendar, contacts etc?
If I delete the (old) EAS account can I then use change or repair to make the (new) IMAP account sync via EAS?

Jeremy

After the email is synced up - give it a day or two and check in the EAS folders to see if the mail synced down to outlook - you'll remove the imap account and keep the EAS account. IMAP doesn't support Calendar and Contacts so you need EAS for that.

Thanks again for your help. Presumably removing the IMAP account leaves the newly imported folders intact? :)

As long as they uploaded to the server and are in the EAS account.

Note that with the move to the new Outlook.com server, once the account is moved you remove the EAS account from outlook and let auto account set it back up as an Exchange account. You'll be able to use import to import mail into the mailbox once you do this.
