Outlook 2016 Sent Mail absent from Sent Mail or Sent Items Folders

The folders do contain some older sent mail, but everything stops about three weeks ago. Where can I look for the problem?

I would start by making sure the email went out. Send an email to yourself. Is it received, and does it show up in Sent mail?

And then look at that received email. What email address does it show as the "From" address? Is it in fact the email address you sent it from?

Address-checked email sent to myself at Outlook 2016 fails to appear in Sent Messages, Sent Items, or Sent Mail (or Outlook.com). It is present in my inbox. A message sent to my wife is gone from my inbox (expected) but does not appear in any of the "Sent" folders.
Also, why do I have three "Sent" folders?
I don't know what to try next

I have sets of folders for the accounts that I set up, plus another set for "outlook.com" , which outlook put in. Perhaps it as to do with the outlook.com site that was set up in order to log into something. I don't know. I don't use it . But I do know that occasionally for no reason that I am aware of, outlook shifts to using that set of folders, so new contacts or email, that I can't locate are found there. I have to uncheck, change defaults, etc. have you checked to see if there are other sent mail folders?

might also be worth looking at file>account settings>account settings>email, click through the different accounts and see what data file they are using at the bottom of screen, or click on 'data files' tab and see if anything looks odd there. ,

one more thing, when looking at the account that you generally send from, in 'more settings>advanced tab>, is there a line about not saving sent mail ? if so, is it checked?

I may have found something! Here is the path: Account Settings/Account Settings/IMAP account settings/more settings/
At the end of that chain is a list of folders and the opportunity to "Save sent items in the following folders:"
Holy cow. Way to hide an option! At the moment it is working, but I never declare victory until some time has passed. Perhaps this can be useful to someone else. I'll report back if it fails again.
