Spam Email?

Hi everyone,
Please can someone help me with this.

I received an email with a Microsoft security code to an email I do not recognize.

I haven't clicked any links but the email does look to be from Microsoft. The 'from' was account-security-noreply@accountprotection.microsoft.com

What I find strange is in the 'to' field that is not my email address.

Is this a common known phishing scam?

I keep checking the origin email address and it does look like it is from Microsoft account-security-noreply@accountprotection.microsoft.com. I have received legitimate emails in the past from that email address when changing my own password.

Any help appreciated thanks.

Is the le @hotmail address yours?

It may be a phishing scan - if you check the header was the first server it passed through (at the bottom of the server lists, not top) a Microsoft server? That would point to a scam. (There is a way scammers can forward mail through Microsoft servers so it looks legit - honoring DMARC and SPF will identify it as not valid.)

You can enter the email address it was sent to Recover your username and see if it is linked to an el****w @ hotmail address.
and in thinking about it... I didn't think that isis the format they use - I thought it was 2 characters then 5 stars: (this is the format for the forgot address form).

If you hover over the 'click here to remove' links or look at the message source, what is the link address? pay close attention - scammers will often use url formats to make you think its microsoft, something like microsoft.scamdomain.com

And after all that...just delete the email if you did not request a code.
