I have boogered my email account/.pst data files. What I want to have is 2 email accounts in two separate .pst files in a directory I specify. Both accounts use IMAP. So for instance one account will by Yahoo email in d:\Yahoo.pst; the other a Google account in d:\Google.pst.
What I have now is a single email account for Yahoo, but two .pst data files. In Account Settings->Data Files, one file is D:\Yahoo(4).pst, is not the default, and I cannot set it to the default because that button is greyed-out. I can't remove this file because it is associated with the email account. The second file is D:\yahoo.pst, is marked default, and I can't remove it because it is the default.
I have tried removing all email accounts, then removing what data files I could (but it will never let me remove the default data file), then exiting Outlook and deleting the .pst data files themselves. It just creates more numbered .pst files when it starts again. I also tried uninstalling Outlook and installing again, no improvement.
Why it is so difficult, or perhaps impossible, to associate a given email account with a given .pst data file I do not know.

When you use IMAP accounts, they each use their own pst file and will create the pst file. You can't specify the pst they use. Once the pst is created it is possible to move it - see http://www.slipstick.com/config/moveimap.asp for instructions.

Close outlook. Go to Control panel, Mail and delete the accounts and pst files from the profile and re-add the accounts. You'll need to let the accounts create the pst. If you want to move the pst files, follow the steps in the url above.

oh, BTW, some people have said when they moved the IMAP pst files in outlook 2010, that they had problems with recieving email. I haven't repro'd it, but select the account and verify the path in the delivery location is correct. Do all of this before opening outlook.

Thanks, it is making progress. But it's not yet the way I'd like.

I deleted the old profile (Control panel->Mail), deleted the old .pst files, and started Outlook. I named a new profile (named Main) and created my two IMAP accounts (Yahoo and Google). But now there are 3 .pst files:

Yahoo - Main.pst

Gmail - Main.pst

Outlook Data File - Main.pst

More annoying, in the Outlook Navigation Pane, it shows the folders for all 3 accounts with the Outlook Data File topmost. But nothing is in it. I have to click on the Inbox's of the other two (Yahoo or Gmail) to actually see email messages.

Is there a way to eliminate the Outlook Data File - Main.pst? I can't delete it because it's the default, and it will not allow another file to be default.

That is as expected - IMAP doesn't support the special folders (calendar, contacts, tasks) so you need the 3rd folder. No, you can't delete it.

Rather than using the folder list, add the folders you use the most to the Favorites section at the top of the Mail module.
