Error: The name cannot be matched to a name in the address list

I am receiving this error after adding my outlook.com account into my Outlook 2016 client. My primary account in Outlook.com is an email of my own domain and I have modifed the cname of my domain so that Outlook can autodiscover it as an outlook.com account - but after it appears to successfully configure itself in Outlook I get the error "The name cannot be matched to a name in the address list" and I cannot open Outlook. I know I can use an outlook.com account as my primary but I want my default address in my outlook client to be my email of my own domain and I have heard that others have been able to get this to work. Any input appreciated.
