Custom Form (seperate layout pages and message reading pane)

2 questions

1) I have a problem with custom form. I have created a one -off custom form to be used to send me a specific resource request as mail message. I have created two pages one for the editing and the other one for the reading. Since the event ITEM_OPEN get trigger when I open the page on both layout, is there a way to test in which layout the page is?

2)Since I have spent so much time with the idea of customizing a message page with active controls, is there any a quick fix solution to the blank reading pane when the message is received (this item contains active content that cannot be displayed in the reading pane)?
