Allow only one instance of Outlook

My keyboard has an E-mail key. But the problem is that, when I press that

key, a new instance of Outlook is launched. Besides that, if I click on the

Outlook icon from the start menu, it also launches a new instance of Outlook.

It's a mess. I want a single instance of Outlook. I looked for an option

like "Allow only one instance" in the options dialogue, but I couldn't find

one. Is there any hidden option?

PS: I guess the command line option "/recycle" is not useful, because it's a

built-in E-mail key and I don't have any drivers to customise its behaviour.

It maybe a built in key but there must be some method of the key being

configured to launch your mail app

You can build your own Shortcut in the Start menu and apply the /Recycle

switch. As to the special Hotkey on the keyboard, look for "Appkey" key

in the registry, and file the one with "Mail" as the data. Back that key

up before you start experimenting.

FWIW, you can only have one instance of outlook running at a time. The other

'instances' are just additional windows. To avoid opening multiple windows

you need to find out how to edit the command line for the button and add

/recycle to the command - its usually in the keyboard utility in control

panel.

I have the similar setup (Win 7 64bit, Outlook 2010 64-bit and a Dell USB keyboard with the keys you mentioned)

This worked for me:

Open RegEdit go to
  1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AppKey\15
  2. You'll see a Key called "Association" with a value of "mailto"
  3. Rename the Key "Association" to "ShellExecute" and change the value of "mailto" to "Outlook /recycle"
And you're done!

Go the idea when looking at the other posts and the mapping of the other keys 16,17,18 and 7. I noticed the calc button doing "ShellExecute" and someone in this post mentioned the "/recycle" switch

Now even if Outlook is minimized it just brings up that window without creating another instance of Inbox

On the control panel idea; I don't have any control panel for the keyboard mapping of the media keys so I couldn't set it there

It's not really a new instance, just a new window. You can only have one instance of outlook running, but you can have several windows open.

Check the properties of the shortcut you use to open Outlook - does it have the recycle switch? Recycle forces outlook to reuse the window.

The start menu icon doesn't support switches, but you can make your own shortcut to use.

The path will look something like "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\OUTLOOK.EXE" /recycle
