Why is there a Name item AND a Display Name item in the Address Book?

There is also the "File as:" name.

The "Full Name" is just that, the person's name.

The "File As:" name is how you want your contacts organized. For example,

you can have them alphabetized by first name first, last name first, Company

name or individual's name.. first name first or last name first, with the

Company name in ( ) also showing in the header of the Contact listing.

The "Display name" is how their name, in an email to the person, shows up in

the "To:" field of the email. For example, you could have them listed as

Robert Jones as their name, with the File As: being Jones, Robert but if

they are a close friend and you call them Bob or Bobby, the Display Name

could show Bob or Bobby (with or without their email address showing).

Because Microsoft likes to annoy? <g> The display name is the one used with the email address field and displays on the To line. The Name field is controlled by the address book options - either full name or fileas format (for a total of 5 formats). The email display name defaults to full name (email) format but can be changed.

Why they choose to use both name and email display is either unknown or I've forgotten. I'm certain it goes way back to the first Exchange client some 15 yrs ago.

I get it.

Cripes, I've "only" had the program a year, and I just discovered that the

Address Book will map addresses (!). This is fun!
