cant accept iCal calendar invites in Outlook 2007 (SP3)

Hi,

i'm having trouble accepting iCal calendar invites sent from a mac and received in Outlook 2007 SP3 (failing on both winXP and Win7 running Outlook 2007 SP3)

I've read countless forums and applied the ExtractOrganizedMeetings registry key as advised by MS KB: You cannot accept an invitation that is in a third-party calendar format in Outlook 2007

(fyi, the hotfix can not be applied, because it pertains to Office SP1, we're running SP3)

can anyone suggest any other solutions? is it an issue from the sender's side ie something they need to do when sending the iCal from their Mac?

i have tested sending an iCal calendar meeting from GMAIL and this .ics attachment comes through into outlook fine. i open it and the accept/decline/tentative buttons are NOT greyed out (like they are from the Mac iCal invite)
