Auto-formatting of certain phone numbers

Is it still impossible to switch off Outlook's auto-format of phone numbers completely? I wasn't able to find anything useful on this topic on Google (apart from the "feature" being impossible to change). I'd prefer to keep it simple:


+CountryCode AreaCode PhoneNumber


i.e. without "special" characters, apart from the leading "+", just spaces between the segments. Outlook tends to add parentheses around area code. (And to add to the confusion, my Nokia sync sometimes put everything together, e.g. +1234567890.)
 
Bad google... i have at least one article on this and a few posts to various forums - granted, older posts say no, but new posts say yes, at least to a degree. Start with trying an area code of 9999 or 99999, or use the international freephone location. See Outlook Tips | Tip 608: More Number Formatting for complete details.
 
I tried using "International Freephone Service" as the location, and restarted Telephony service afterwards. The phone number I entered in a phone field was instead changed from "+1 212 5551212" into "1 212 5551212" (which is even worse as the "+" indicates that the number starts in country code).

And now, for reasons unknown, it gets changed back to "+1 (212) 5551212" again. Is this also in any way connected to whatever is (or isn't) written in the contact's Country/Region field?
