Outlook 2016 bottom reading pane has disappeared

I have been using Outlook 2016 for over a year with no problem. I prefer the bottom reading pane and it's been working fine until it suddenly stopped working two days ago. When I set the reading pane for the right, it works as it is supposed to. With it set for bottom, I now have to click on each e-mail to open it in order to read. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
 
Do you see anything in the reading pane when its on the bottom? I can't repro...

I know the header in the bottom pane wastes a lot of space, if this is the issue, click the ^ at the bottom right of the header area to shrink it.
