Not really. If you don't use categories, you can use conditional formatting to highlight the events for today in a color - but conditional formatting won't apply if there is a category assigned (my daily purple events) and if you don't check for recurring, every recurring event will be colored.
Some people use a 'today' all day & busy appointment to color the cell then move it everyday - that works best if you use the week view or don't have a lot of appointments overflowing, at least in my opinion. Others create an all day event for every day and use a black category for past dates.

Too bad Microsoft doesnt make Outlook more customizable and user friendly
Some one will come up with such a product and Outlook will be relegated to the dustbin
