My Outlook 2016 is playing up !
I received mails until 5pm yesterday, opened Outlook again 3 hours later and got the window :
“Enter your user name and password for the following server.” pop.gmail.com
Correct user name and password were already filled in, of course

File > accounts settings > repair = Something went wrong
either
- Outlook couldn’t update your password
- We couldn’t log on the incoming (POP) server

smtp.gmail.com is blocked the same way
My mail shield (avast) is turned off

I tried creating a new profile, following your “how to”, the auto account setup failed, I did it manually and the test failed
Accounts settings errors.jpg

I created my mails accounts on “Mail”, the app provided with Win10 and all works fine there
I got my mails and turned off “mail” on the accounts profiles so as not to disturb Outlook
Please, any advice on how I could get Outlook to work again ?

Hello Diane !
I could not find where to access on/off for less secure apps
Instead I found the possibility to create an "app password"
Gmail generated such a password for Outlook, I replaced my own password with this one and... it works ! 🥳
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction 🙂
Have a safe and relaxing holiday season 🎄
Priska

You have 2-step verification enabled on the gmail account? If so, there is no less secure apps options- only app password. Which you do need with pop accounts - POP won't ask for the second factor. (IMAP will.)

That's right, 2-step verification has been enabled by gmail, I was informed but not given any choice, though I guess it's probably a good thing... 😐

Yes, it's a good thing - they a working on forcing everyone to use it, moving some 150 million users to it by the end of the year.
