Unable to view older emails in desktop app

Outlook 2016 32 bit
Email Account
Office 365 Exchange
For older emails > 12 months, I get the following message “connect to the server to view them” rather than click here with the hyperlink like my work colleague. We are both using the same Microsoft cached exchange account.

Why is it saying “connect to the server” despite it saying connected to Microsoft exchange on the desktop app.

I can view the emails on the web so it’s not big deal.
