Outlook ribbon menu default?

Outlook version:     Classic Outlook
Email type or host:    Microsoft 365
Microsoft 365 Outlook ribbon does not default to any of the selections i.e.; File, Home, Send/Receive, View, or Help. It always used to default to Home. Now I have to select it every time. Do I have something setup incorrectly?
 
What buttons are visible when you open it?

It should default to the first ribbon tab (File is not a ribbon) - which is Home (but can be changed as in my screenshot).

I'm having trouble loading a screenshot. Here goes.

Notice no underline on any menu items. It used to go to the Home tab which was underlined, but no more. Now I have to select it first.
 
That looks like the black theme, simplified ribbon. The line should be blue. Are you using the left nav bar and does it have the blue line at the selected module?

Have you tried repairing office install? That would be my first step.
 
Yes. There is a blue vertical line next to the envelope icon as in your picture. When I hold my mouse cursor over the Home or Send/Receive as you show, the underline is gray but no line unless the cursor is hovering. I have not tried repairing the install yet. I'll try when I get some time.
 
Well I tried the quick repair first to no avail. Then I changed the simplified ribbon to classic ribbon and the blue line did appear. Then switched back to the simplified ribbon and this time the blue line stayed. Guess it's fixed. Don't know if the quick repair helped or not, but am happy the blue line is working again. Thanks for the help Diane (again)!
 
Well this near 80 year old brain cannot remember what I tried and didn't try before trying to find an answer on the forum! I used to be good at and enjoyed troubleshooting computer and software problems but technology has swiftly passed me by. Copilot had to tell me how to do a repair :( . Thanks again Diane!
