Email Account
POP3
I have OL 2007 configured with a POP3 mail account. There is no email certificate installed on the client. I tried to send an encrypt email to a recipient who is in the OL contacts list with his certificate stored in there, but it was not successful. First of all, there was no encrypt email icon in the ribben. If I checked the Encrypt message contents and attachments check box under Message options\security settings and hit the send button, a Invalid Certificate error message pop up and said Microsoft Office Outlook cannot sign or encrypt this message because you have no certificates which can be used to send from the email address (my pop3 email). What I need here is to send some encrypted email using his/her public key, I don't need to sign any email so I presume I don't need to install my own certificate. Any idea?
Thanks

AFAIK, you need your own certificate to sign mail. You can get a free one here: http://www.instantssl.com/ssl-certificate-products/free-email-certificate.html

From http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/encrypt-e-mail-messages-HP001230536.aspx :

Sending and viewing encrypted e-mail messages requires both sender and recipient to share their digital ID (digital ID: Contains a private key that stays on the sender's computer and a certificate (with a public key). The certificate is sent with digitally signed messages. Recipients save the certificate and use the public key to encrypt messages to the sender.), or public key certificate. This means you and the recipient each must send the other a digitally signed message, which enables you to add the other person's certificate to your Contacts. Once both parties have shared certificates, sending and viewing encrypted e-mail messages between them is the same as with any other e-mail messages. You can learn about digital IDs here and learn how to get and exchange digital IDs here.

As I said, I don't need to sign the email, just encrypt email to a specific user.

# 1 Select the "Message" tab when composing an email in Outlook 2007.

# 2 Click the arrow at the lower-right corner of the "Options" group to open the "Message Options" dialog box.

# 3 Click on the button labeled "Security Settings."

# 4 Check the box next to "Add digital signature to this message." Click "OK." Click "Close" to exit the "Message Options" dialog box.

# 5 Enter the email address of the recipient into the "To.." field and click the "Send" button to send out the digitally signed email message.

# 6 Once you and the recipient have each sent each other an email using this process, you will be able to send one another encrypted email messages by checking the box next to "Encrypt message contents and attachments" in the Security Settings menu (repeat steps 1 through 3 to access this menu again).

As I said, I don't have my own certificate, so I can't install it. As far as I understand, I just need someone's certificate in order to send them encrypted message. And I already have his certificate by having him sending me a signed message.

You need to get your own certificate - you can't send encrypted messages unless you have a certificate and the recipient has your key.

Ok, it works if I installed an email certificate. I thought an email certificate is not required for sending encrypted email. Essentially, only recipient's public key is required for encryption, isn't it?

Nope, it requires both your public key and the other persons key to encrypt/decrypt.
