Using Win 8.1 64-bit, I run into the following problem when setting up a single Gmail account in Outlook 2016 :

I've created 4 folders under my email address, as seen in the attached Outlook screenshot.

I then create a rule to filter certain emails to each of these 4 folders:
from xxxxx@xxxxx.xxx
move to folder xxxxx
and stop processing more rules

Problem is that when an email is automatically

moved to these 4 folders via rules, then I also receive the Outlook envelope icon in the taskbar.
This is not what I want, and for some reason it was not like this when I used Outlook 2016 and a POP account instead of IMAP.

I also have Spamfighter auto-filtering spam to my [Gmail]Spam folder and the same thing happens there.

I only want to see the envelope icon indicating arrival of new email when something is sent to my Inbox (which I do currently).
Anything that is filtered with rules I don't want to be alerted about.

Does anyone have a simple solution without having to create a bunch of more rules?

To remove envelop icon for certain folder in Outlook 2016 you can use these steps
Start-> Personalization-> Taskbar-> Select which icons appear on the taskbar. Locate the entry for Microsoft Outlook that has the envelope icon. Click on the “Off” toggle button to set it to “On” so that the icon won't get hidden automatically anymore.

Open Outlook and after opening, option dialog hit the mail. Under the message arrival section on the right side check a show an envelope option in the taskbar and then hit ok.

The "show an envelope icon in the taskbar" is already checked. And I'm not sure if you even understood the problem. I want to remove the envelope icon for mail that is filtered via rules into certain folders.

Did I say that the envelope icon is getting hidden automatically?? Read my post again. I am saying that the envelope icon shows up in the taskbar NO MATTER WHAT FOLDER IS RECEIVING MAIL! I only want to see the envelope icon when the default inbox folder is receiving mail.

And in taskbar-->notification area, the program "Microsoft Outlook" is set to "only show notifications". In other words, I am receiving a notification when I am receiving mail and everything works fine. The problem is how to REMOVE the notification for 4 folders, and not how to add it. Sheesh.

That is a long standing problem - it comes through the inbox, the envelope is set, and then is moved. A retired Outlook MVP had a work around for this with older versions of outlook but i don't know if that still works - that was back in the 2003/2007 days. I'll see if i can find her solution and test it. (I don't even recall exactly what it was anymore.)

Did you find the work around, Mrs Poremsky?
