Problem moving file “Email folders.pst” to new PC

Hi all,

In my new PC I manage to view in Outlook all my data in the “Email folders.pst” file of my old PC.
I was assuming that Outlook would therewith also access my email coordinates, but that seems not to be the case: when I try to send a test message the system reacts:

“No valid email accounts are configured. Add an account to send email”

So, I enter my former email address and corresponding IMAP settings.
To my surprise, a new .OST file is now created alongside my old .PST file. Outlook ignores all data in this PST file and just starts downloading tons of old emails into this OST file.
I do not want this OST file, yet Outlook seems to force it upon me: if in Account Settings – Data files I try to remove it, the system reacts:

“This data file is associated with a mail account. To remove it, use the “Email” tab”.

Right, but then how to “associate” my email account with my old PST file instead?
I have lots of double emails in both files now.
Could someone have the kindness of telling me what I do wrong, and how to limit the system to just this PST file?

It sounds like you use POP on the old computer - Outlook defults to IMAP. Remove the account and add it back - on the first screen, enter the address and then click Advanced options and choose manual setup. Then choose POP. Choose the old pst as the default data file and it *should* just download new messages.
 
Thank you very much for your answer, Diane Poremsky; I wasn't thinking of trying POP. But it still does not work.

In accordance with the specifications of the server here, I entered the parameters as in attached image (and you are right: this way it does ask for my PST file). After the next step with the password, the connection test keeps ending with the message:

"We couldn't connect to the incoming (POP) server. The server reported an error. [...]"

I get this, even with firewall etc switched off. Strangely, as you suggested, my old PC (which is still running) uses POP.

I've been fighting this thing for 3 days now, it's making me crazy! Isn't there anything else I could try?

With or without it produces the same effect.

I have tried so many things by now that I can better un-install MSO completely and then reinstall it and see. That might be better to wipe out any broken pieces of configuration settings. I will report on this tomorrow.

Meanwhile my kindest thanks for your suggestions and appreciated attention.
 
Despair...

I have reinstalled MO completely, removed any profile, then tried setting it up again using POP and parameters above. The error message remains the same. I cannot connect with POP even though the service provider assured me POP "should" work.

Why is such professional software so buggy...!?

My old PC still works correctly and its file/folder/user name configuration is identical. So, would there be a way to copy all Outlook configuration file and registry data from the old into the new PC? Or any other way to kill this dragon? I'm out of ideas now, completely. :(
