Word experienced and error trying to open the file

I have a fresh install of Win 7 and MS Office 2010. When I try to open an MS Word document that has been sent as an attachment in Outlook 2010 it will not open and I get the error message " Word experienced an error trying to open the file" and it goes on to give suggestions of what to try. I have tried using the repair option with no luck and I have tried .doc and .docx files and neither open. I have sent the same files to my office computer that does open them properly so I don't think the file is really corrupt. I have tried opening the files emulating various versions of Word with no luck. It mentioned using a Text converter but I haven't been able to locate this option for Word 2010. I just tried to open an Excel file too and it also gave a file corrupt cannot open error. I have also tried repairing my Office installation and nothing changed. Very frustrating....HELP!
 
In my opinion I think Open and Repair which is the inbuilt utility can be used to fix this Word error and it may open the document. Have you tried opening the document in notepad or wordpad?
