I recently upgraded computers including a newer version of Outlook 2010. On my old computer, I had been archiving e-mails. I was able to transfer the email archives to my new computer, but I am not able to open while in Outlook. I have tried both the import and open options under the Outlook file tab. The import option comes up with an error message. The open option goes through without any noticable errors, but the e-mails are not showing up anywhere. I am able to see my archive (pst) files in their respective archive folders. I have even been able to open and view the archived e-mails using a 3rd party software, however, that is too cumbersome. I need to be able to open the archives within Outlook. Please help!!!! Are the archives opening in Outlook, but they are in a location which I might not be looking (I have opened every folder and do not see them anywhere)? Thanks!

Can you open the archive pst files using File, Open, Outlook data file? I'm guessing the file you moved from the old computer is corrupt and you'll need to get a new copy from the old computer.

What 3rd party software did you use to view the mail?

Yeah, I've tried to open using, File, Open, Open Outlook Data file. No luck. When I browse through folders, I can see the pst files and folders. Outlook actually goes through the opening process as though nothing as wrong...only problem is that files don't pop up anywhere. The 3rd party software is Phoenix Outlook PST repair. The Phoenix program also resaves as a separate pst file, however, even that new file is not able to be opened. Thx.

Do you get any error messages? Or, what is the error message you get when you try to import? How did you transfer the pst file? Outlook needs read-write access to open pst files.

Go to File, Account Settings, Data files. How many pst files are there? If you add the pst using this dialog, do you see it in this list? Back in Outlook, press Ctrl+6 to jump to the folder list - do you see all of the psts files you saw in the Data files dialog? (Ctrl+1 will get you back to mail.)

It's possible that the navigation pane is corrupt and it's hiding the data file - this will remove folders you added to the Favorites folder list so only use it if the pst are listed in the data file list. Open outlook with the /resetnavpane switch:

Close Outlook. At the Start search field on Vista or Windows7 Start menu or in the Start menu, Run command (Windows key + R), type

outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Then press Enter (or OK button) to restart Outlook.

Note: Make sure there is a space between the words.

If all else fails, make a new profile with the old pst in it. keep your current profile- we just want to know if it will open.
