Change length of phone number in contacts

i am looking for a way to change the length of the phone number field in contacts. the issue is when i submit a pause after the number, the phone system in my car doesn't recognize the space that is automatically inserted in outlook and thinks it has reached the end of the number and doesn't dial the additional numbers. this occurs when trying to dial a conference call or my voice mail.
 
I'm not sure what changing the phone field length will do...

Are you inserting it as a space? Try comma instead. That is recognized by many modems as a pause. How long it waits depends on the phone, but you can use more than one for more time.
 
the reason i am trying to change the length is, after i put the phone number in and then the commas, when i hit enter, the system puts in a space between the number and the comma. i was looking for a way to eliminate the space. if the space is there, the system thinks i am done entering the number and ignores the rest of the string. i am trying to enter a number in the format: 9999999999,,,1111111#,,# where 9 = the phone number. 1 = concall number
 
Ah... so you already had the pause in. Do one of two things: set the location in Control panel, Phone and modem settings to international freephone or use an area code of 9999 - Outlook Tips | Tip 608: More Number Formatting - that should stop the formatting.
