Dear Outlook Forum Users

This problem has been asked in 2005 and 2009 - and the answer has been that Outlook does not provide a solution. I would like this answer reviewed and perhaps encourage some tips on how one might achieve a solution.

I wish to sort a list of contact by a string of the combined categories - in this sorted list I want to see contacts only once as per any other sort. This would enable me to see patterns of categories for my contacts.

At present, when one selects sort category in an Outlook view with name and category fields displayed, Outlook groups (not sorts) by category and contacts can appear twice or more. Presumably this happens because this is how the data is arranged and it is easier.

I suspect that one way of achieving this would be to populate a user created field with a string containing the category names. Is this a reasonable way of proceeding or is there a simpler way?

I have no knowledge of VB. Can anyone help me get started on the VB code needed?

I would be most grateful for some help.

PS. An alternative way of describing the solution is to some how enable contacts to be grouped by "category groups". This might have the advantage of enabling drag and drop contacts from one category group to another.

You can't usually sort but custom fields, but if you could, it would be the way to do it - save for one problem. If you use a straight string, CatA, CatB won't be the same as CatB, CatA. (That's why you can't do it in Outlook.)
